Their uniqueness lies in their original function, their privileged location, and the use of innovative technologies for the time. Designed by architect Ricardo Bastida, these galleries were commissioned in 1918 by the influential industrialist Horacio Echevarrieta. Although construction began as a response to a landslide, Echevarrieta transformed necessity into opportunity, creating a space from which he could contemplate and control his vast interests: the iron mines on the left bank of the Bilbao estuary, the port from which his ships sailed to international markets, and the flourishing social scene of Getxo, which was becoming a European maritime leisure destination. This 2025, this place opens as never before to Bizkaia and the world.
