Green light for the work on Punta Begoña's Main Hall and its monumental access

Work also begins on the iconic south pavilion of the galleries.

The 2% Cultural Program of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Agenda has notified the definitive resolution that paves the way for the contracting process for the works on Punta Begoña’s Main Hall and its monumental access.

The project received the twelfth highest score among nearly a thousand proposals from across the country, securing the necessary funding for its development.

In 2026, work will also begin on the monument’s south pavilion, thanks to the funding obtained from the Open Call by the Department of Culture and Linguistic Policy of the Basque Government for the enhancement and dissemination of its cultural heritage, in which the project submitted by the Punta Begoña Foundation received the second highest score among proposals from the Autonomous Community.

These interventions aim to restore the splendor of the monumental spaces and optimize their social use, following a year 2025 in which more than one hundred public activities have been held in the galleries.

Since the establishment of the Punta Begoña Foundation in 2021, the less visible but most necessary and urgent works for the structural consolidation of this heritage asset have been carried out. This is a construction situated on a flysch cliff, to which it has been necessary to technically “stitch” the monument to prevent displacement. In the less resistant areas of the cliff, complex micropiling was even required to secure the foundations of the complex.

Following these interventions, and in accordance with the roadmap defined before the Foundation’s board of trustees, work has been carried out during 2024 and 2025 to manage funding for the development of the works on the hall, access, and south pavilion, which are now commencing.

These interventions respond to technical priorities, while making visible the future of the monument’s final restoration. But they also contribute to providing greater functionality to the complex, optimizing the possibilities for cultural, social, and educational use.

During 2025, thousands of people actively participated in the activities hosted at Punta Begoña. The works now being undertaken will allow this use to be increased and respond to the numerous proposals constantly received from the public.

In this way, the open restoration, through social dynamics, is shaping the future of Punta Begoña, which has already become, due to its history, location, architecture, and functionality, a civic facility at the service of society.
