We are committed to sustainability

We firmly believe that cultural heritage and the way it is managed can play a leading role in achieving sustainable development.

That is why we turn this belief into action, ensuring that everything we do contributes to the Sustainable Development Goals.

SGS International Certification Services, a world-leading certification company, has verified our contribution towards achieving these goals.

Through Punta Begoña Fundazioa, Punta Begoña has become one of the first cultural heritage projects to receive this type of certification, demonstrating that an integrated approach to heritage management can be a powerful driver of development.

Educación de calidad

Education in, through, and for heritage

Our main aim is to harness the many values of cultural heritage, the wide range of disciplines it brings together and the engaging experiences it offers, turning it into a valuable resource for learning beyond the classroom. In doing so, we seek to promote sustainable development and raise awareness of cultural diversity.

Igualdad de género

Reflection, visibility, and action for equality

The project includes initiatives that explore and highlight the contribution of women to Punta Begoña, as well as their role in cultural heritage, both past and present.

It is also committed to promoting equality through the way the project is structured, managed and communicated.

Energía Asequible

Environmentally conscious

The restoration of Punta Begoña helps reduce its environmental impact through the reuse of existing urban resources, in line with the principles of the European Green Deal

In addition, the project has the Basque Ethical Tourism Seal for the commitments and criteria followed in its development.

Industria, innovación

Experimenting to innovate

The open intervention process is based on transparency in research, restoration and management, encouraging active participation and, in turn, fostering social innovation.

Meanwhile, the project has been declared by the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) as a prominent interdisciplinary challenge and by the Basque Government as one of the strategic scientific and technological projects of Euskadi in its 2020 Science, Technology and Innovation Plan.

Hacia un verdadero foco cívico y urbano

Towards a true civic and urban hub

On a heavily developed coastline, Punta Begoña brings together architectural, artistic and geological values which, through an integrated approach, can enhance the visual quality of the coastline in one of the Basque Country’s most visited areas.

But beyond the image, the cultural landscape of Punta Begoña is configured as a space for coexistence, creation, training, and enjoyment that contributes to making a city more liveable, inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable.

Solo se protege lo que se conoce

We only protect what we understand

Transparency lies at the very heart of the project. Its purpose is to open up the entire process of restoring an exceptional heritage site to the public—from research and restoration to finding new uses for the site—while keeping people informed of the progress made and involving them in decisions about how Punta Begoña is used, both during the restoration process and in the future.
