A spectacular multimedia edition will showcase the Intangible Heritage of the Nervión estuary in an informative, engaging, and accessible way.

The initiative, which originated from an exhibition by Fundación Punta Begoña Fundazioa, will allow the project to be disseminated to a potential audience of millions of readers.

In the first months of 2026, the publication “Nervión Estuary. Life Between Tides”, a large-format editorial project with a meticulous presentation, is set to arrive in bookstores, destined to become a reference on the living memory of the Nervión estuary.

The book’s objective is to be a visual and powerful call to attention regarding the valuable role of the estuary in our lives, so that the shared intangible heritage, which it has shaped for centuries, achieves the recognition, promotion, and dissemination it deserves.

With this objective, Zorrozúa publishing house has developed a project that captures years of research and searching in the main archives, libraries, and newspaper libraries, as well as through hundreds of testimonies collected in conversations, consultations, and interviews with protagonists.

The book incorporates evocative photographs from the late 19th century, showing in images the transition to the present.

Also audiovisual materials of great historical value, which transport us to a distant past, yet close and recognizable in concerns and ways of life.

And a design that seeks spectacularity, proposing a development linked to stories, anecdotes, and “happenings”, which aim to give the greatest relevance to the testimonies of those who are protagonists.

The result is an unprecedented publication in its format on how the Nervión estuary has marked the history of Bizkaia for centuries. Because for centuries, between tides, Bizkaia residents have worked, rested, competed, enjoyed, prayed, celebrated, come and gone along this channel.

Almost 80% of Bizkaia’s population lives in the metropolitan context of the estuary. Half of the Basque population. And many of us are from Bizkaia because this estuary provided work for our mothers, fathers, grandmothers, and great-grandparents.

The book aims to tell how we were, how we lived, how we are, and very probably how we will be, from the perspective of this shared scenario.

The Punta Begoña Foundation plays a prominent role in the book, because it is at the origin of the initiative and the commitment to identify and valorize the intangible heritage of the Nervión estuary. The exhibition organized in Punta Begoña during 2023 had an extraordinary impact and publicized the project for the restoration and enhancement of the Galleries.

The publication of the book, in which relevant institutions and entities have been involved, will feature a dissemination campaign, in establishments, presentations, media, social networks, etc., which will contribute to publicizing the Foundation’s work and its initiative to promote Bizkaia’s intangible heritage.

But the fundamental value of the editorial project is its choral nature, the prominence of so many personalities, associations, entities, and institutions that have shared experiences and built a common history and heritage that, once again as always happened in the Estuary, reinvents itself to look to the future.
