Horacio Echevarrieta was born in Bilbao in 1870, but he made Punta Begoña his vital space and the base of an extraordinary career.
Considered the most important businessman in the country’s history, and one of the most important in Europe, he founded companies such as Iberdrola, Iberia, Cementos Portland, shipyards, major shipping lines, mining businesses and oil exploration ventures… He developed Madrid’s Gran Vía, part of Bilbao’s Ensanche, built Line 2 of the Barcelona Metro and promoted the Niagara Falls Suspension Bridge… He rescued prisoners from the War of Africa, and was known as “the strikebreaker businessman” for his commitment to improving miners’ living conditions…
From Punta Begoña he designed a gigantic empire, with achievements that have endured to this day. That is why his soul remained here, and now, on site, he will reveal to us these and other stories from a life worthy of a film, showing us his places and secrets.
*We recommend wearing comfortable shoes and warm clothing as the building is an open-air space.
*It is advisable to come by public transport on days with good weather (beach) or when there are sporting or cultural activities, as parking spaces are in high demand and visitors to the galleries take time to find parking.
