The experience of writing poetry varies depending on whether we are at home or outdoors, or on the landscape in which we find ourselves immersed.
In this poetry workshop, that will take place on the 29th September, we will write poems whilst wearing hard hats from a unique location: the Punta Begoña Galleries. Immersed in the poetics of the building and its surroundings, we will create metaphors using architectural terms, explore the historical textures of Punta Begoña, discover the vertical dimension of poetry, and delve into language from various literary perspectives.
Four poetry-writing exercises will be carried out, with the following titles:
A short ‘ice-breaker’ exercise using architectural language to develop the basic building blocks of poems: the verse, and the rhetorical device par excellence: the metaphor.
The poetics of a place are imbued with what we feel there. Writing from the sensation evoked by a space, including what we see, but also what lies beyond: those events, memories, recollections and feelings that intertwine within a single coordinate, bringing focus to a specific place: the one where the poem becomes a poem.
In poetry, unlike in narrative, time is vertical. There is no succession of events but rather a superimposition of layers, just like the successive layers that clad a building, just like the multiplicity of elements we might find in a landscape. Different eras may coexist: a prehistoric settlement, a crumbling hill, a conversation between an architect and a businessman, a bourgeois party, a field hospital, the bloodiest military strategies, graffiti sprayed on a wall, the sound of skateboards scraping across the ground.
The public will be invited to read their poem on the day of the competition’s awards ceremony and the exhibition’s opening.
This workshop will be led by the poet Lucía Emmanuel, co-editor and co-author of the handbook Escribir Poesía (Writing Poetry), published by Páginas de Espuma, a lecturer at the Escuela de Escritores and coordinator of the courses in Bilbao.
The poems produced as a result of the creative prompts will form the basis of a poetry reading to be held during the discussion session on 1 October in Punta Begoña Galleries.
