What remains today of the former gardens of the Echevarrieta residence is only a small part of the original 13,000-square-metre estate that Horacio Echevarrieta gradually assembled to create his property in Getxo.
A century ago, this was a lively estate filled with terraces, pathways, coach houses, greenhouses, livestock enclosures, tool sheds, kitchen gardens, tamarind trees and even a tennis court, combining domestic life with leisure.
Today, visitors can enjoy 4,650 square metres of these historic gardens. Little by little, their viewpoints and pathways are being restored, while new discoveries continue to reveal the many earlier chapters in the history of Punta Begoña. Beneath our feet, and set against this remarkable landscape, the remains of the former Fort of Begoña, Bilbao’s quarantine station and the prehistoric settlement at El Abra coexist with the surviving features of the bourgeois garden.
