The intervention will restore the splendor of this emblematic Getxo space and optimize its social use.

This is a technically complex project that, in an internationally pioneering way, will be streamed daily through the @puntabegonaoficial account on Instagram.

The work will be open for visits and will become, during its development, an open classroom and a technical and professional meeting point, with requests already received from professional associations and international congresses to attend in person.

The recovery and structural reinforcement works of the main hall of the Punta Begoña Galleries, as well as the restoration of its monumental access, have begun and will have an execution period of eleven months. This is a project that will be at the international forefront due to the transparency involved in showing the process from the first to the last day, both in person and weekly through the @puntabegonaoficial Instagram account.

Since 2021, the date of the establishment of the Punta Begoña Foundation, the less visible but most necessary and urgent works for the consolidation of the complex have been carried out, guaranteeing safety. Now, a phase aimed at recovering the monument’s splendor and enabling new spaces for public use to meet social demand for hosting activities in Punta Begoña is being addressed. In 2025 alone, more than 100 activities open to the public were developed, with thousands of people participating. And all this while the work progresses.

At the International Forefront

The works, with a budget of 1,168,411 euros (769,000 euros obtained through a grant from the 2% Cultural Program, promoted by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Agenda, in whose open call Punta Begoña obtained the twelfth best score among the almost one thousand projects submitted), include the structural consolidation of the reception hall —including floor slab, roof, and false ceiling—, as well as the recovery of the access staircase, the monumental vestibule, and the Flysch cave, reinforcing their heritage value and functionality.

The intervention will be carried out applying the Sustainable Development Goals, prioritizing universal accessibility, people’s safety, the healthiness of spaces, the efficient recovery of resources, and the creation of spaces for coexistence and social enjoyment that contribute to making cities more livable.

In this sense, it is an internationally pioneering experience due to the transparency involved in showing the process from the first to the last day, both in person and through its broadcast on social media. Several weekly milestones, through reports, videos, interviews, live stories, sliders, evolution clips, or a final documentary, will show the exhaustive development of the work, conveying challenges, problems that arise, and their solutions.

As stated by the president of the Punta Begoña Fundazioa Foundation and mayor of Getxo, Amaia Aguirre:

“It is a truly powerful novelty that has not been applied to the recovery of a building. It is also a significant challenge in the commitment to the dissemination and transparency of the process, by exposing the work to all eyes throughout its duration. And, of course, a very valuable training tool, which we are working to make available to professionals from very different fields related to heritage.”

Open Restoration

The work can be witnessed during the visits, which not only will not be interrupted, but will become active, living, and open classrooms, and a professional meeting point for forums, professional associations, technicians, companies, and congresses. Associations of architects, quantity surveyors, engineers, and international congresses have already requested to visit the works.

Interest is heightened by the prestige of the professionals who will carry out the work after winning the tender and who have participated in such notable projects as the Oceanogràfic of Valencia (regarding structures) or the Cathedral of Granada, Cathedral of Seville, Prado National Museum, Old Cathedral of Vitoria-Gasteiz, or Roman Theater of Córdoba (at a heritage level). Their “knowledge, enthusiasm, and experience” will be added to a project they have described as “an example of collective effort and innovation that recovers the spirit and courage of its creator to erect a monument of these characteristics in a privileged location.”
