The ocean economy discovers the potential of Punta Begoña.
Oceans For Future decided to hold its session at Punta Begoña on the occasion of the BEOW 2025 Basque Environment Week, organized by Nakusarbe, Association for the Dissemination of Science and Culture, Only One Communication and Marketing and Coop&Co2030, the Cooperative Knowledge Management Network for Sustainable Human Development.
This networking meeting, held at the Galerías on Ekaina 6, is organized in commemoration of World Oceans Day, established by the United Nations and celebrated annually on Ekaina 8, with the aim of raising awareness about the vital importance of oceans in our daily lives and specifically in climate regulation.
In this context, the Blue Economy emerges as a key strategy to drive sustainable economic growth, maximizing the responsible use of marine resources.
According to the event organizers: “the blue economy represents an opportunity for Getxo to establish itself as a benchmark in sustainable development, leveraging its coastal location and business dynamism”.
The workshop brought together business and institutional leaders, entrepreneurs, and innovators in research, scientific, and economic fields at Punta Begoña to explore and share experiences related to the Blue Economy from the perspective of sustainable use.
The choice of Punta Begoña as the venue is due to its strategic location and history linked to the sea for centuries, and to the personality of its promoter, Horacio Echevarrieta, one of the most memorable entrepreneurs, due to the vast number of ventures he launched throughout his life, many of which have survived to this day. And certainly, because a large part of his professional and personal life was linked to the sea.
Nor is it a minor reason for choosing the Galerías that its restoration project is internationally pioneering due to its exhaustive accreditation in compliance with and effectiveness of the Sustainable Development Goals.
The organizing team and participants toured Punta Begoña guided by the Director of the Foundation, María Peraita, and specialists in the figure of Horacio Echevarrieta as an entrepreneur who made the sea his trade and his passion.
The adaptation of the Galerías for the workshop tasks demonstrated the functional potential of Punta Begoña, which was highly valued by the participants. Its status as an exceptional setting and a historical-cultural element of the Territory was also highlighted in subsequent reports.
History, strategic location, construction quality, and multiple functionality are the foundations of the restoration project of the Galerías Punta Begoña, aimed at social and cultural profitability and the full enjoyment of the space by the public, both during and after the restoration.
