Punta Begoña is one of the few heritage sites to serve as a living laboratory.
Research teams from the University of the Basque Country (EHU) have spent years taking measurements and carrying out analyses and studies to understand how humidity, salt, wave action, pollution, industry and traffic affect the materials that make up the monument.
Today, the Punta Begoña Foundation continues this research and monitoring work to identify the best techniques for the site’s restoration.
Sensors, 3D scanners, monitoring techniques, drones and purpose-designed experiments provide real-time data and help develop more effective conservation strategies. This research not only helps protect the building, but also generates scientific knowledge that can be applied to other coastal heritage sites.
