Interview from the studio and visit to Punta Begoña to discuss the roadmap of the project and its day-to-day intense activity, on the path toward completion of the works and full social use of the monument.
The Galerías Punta Begoña, located on the coast of Getxo, stand out as one of the most emblematic constructions of the early 20th century in Euskadi. Their uniqueness lies in their original function, their privileged location, and the use of innovative technologies for the time. Designed by architect Ricardo Bastida, these galleries were commissioned in 1918 by the influential industrialist Horacio Echevarrieta. Although construction began as a response to a landslide, Echevarrieta transformed necessity into opportunity, creating a space from which he could contemplate and control his vast interests: the iron mines on the left bank of the Bilbao estuary, the port from which his ships sailed to international markets, and the flourishing social scene of Getxo, which was becoming a European maritime leisure destination. This 2025, this place opens as never before to Bizkaia and the world. In fact, according to Fundación Punta Begoña, the volume of activity will increase over the coming months, combining new cultural and historical content with restoration interventions and enabling of spaces that will expand the possibilities for use and enjoyment of the cultural landscape that the Galleries comprise.
