• The process is leading Getxo to acquire an exceptional civic facility, due to its history, cultural and educational potential, urban improvement, and social openness and participation.

• The construction plan is exhibited in the Flysch Cave and can now be viewed during visits to the facility

• For the 2025-2027 phase, the Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda of the Government of Spain, through its 2% Cultural program, has granted almost €770,000.

Maiatzaor Amaia Aguirre announced today, during a visit by the Government Sub-delegate in Bizkaia, Carlos García, to Galerías Punta Begoña, that the restoration of the building will conclude in 2031, according to the planned construction schedule, which can now be viewed during visits to the facility. This very week, a space as emblematic as the Flysch Cave, which preserves in the cliff strata on which it rests a history of millions of years, hosts the exhibition of the aforementioned construction plan, from the beginning of the works until their conclusion, scheduled for 2031.

The tour of the visit, guided by the director of Fundación Punta Begoña, María Peraita, concluded in the aforementioned cave, where the mentioned construction plan was explained to the Government Sub-delegate in Bizkaia. Since the establishment of Fundación Punta Begoña in 2021, all institutions have recognized the importance of the project and support it. Thus, the Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda of the Government of Spain, through its 2% Cultural program, the Department of Culture and Language Policy of the Basque Government, the Provincial Council of Bizkaia, and the Getxo Town Council itself co-finance the works for the recovery and enhancement of the galleries. As a result, currently 50% of the Foundation’s activity is funded with extra-municipal investment.

Therefore, the assessment and support from the Central Government with almost €770,000 for the 2025-2027 phase represents a crucial endorsement of the project, because Punta Begoña has been selected in a second Call among nearly a thousand proposals from across the State, which speaks to the value of the project and the high regard for its management.

With this funding, among other things, the works that will allow unrestricted public use of the great hall will be undertaken, through the consolidation and reinforcement of the complex structure of its floor and ceiling, in addition to the comprehensive and scientific restoration of the staircase and decorations of the original vestibule that provided access to this representative space. This will restore the historic circulation now lost and will reveal the future aesthetic that the monument will have after its rehabilitation.

“2025 marks the beginning of the final phase of comprehensive recovery of Punta Begoña. The demand for activities and, in most cases, citizen proposals for their development, advise decisively advancing toward the enabling of the spaces. Throughout each of the coming years, Punta Begoña will increasingly become an open space for creation, exhibition and training, a meeting point for leisure and social enjoyment, an exceptional civic facility due to its location, its history and its beauty. To achieve this, it is essential to carry out an implementation effort in the 2025-2027 period, which represents a decisive advance in the physical recovery of the monument, functionalization and contribution to the urban beautification of the surrounding area and coastline. From there, and with the functional core of the heritage site already recovered and with full capacity for use, the 2025-2030 period will serve to consolidate and expand the possibilities for exhibition, educational and urban use of the building with the incorporation of new enabled and enclosed spaces. Finally, once the north (“The representation hall”) and south (“The recreation gallery”) poles are demonstrating their sociocultural possibilities, it will be necessary to finalize the urban image of the monument which, during the 2029-2031 period, will recover the landscape icon that it constitutes on the Getxo coastline”
